Swiss System

A match is a formal contest in which two or more persons or teams compete. An equal match is when persons or teams are of similar standing in a group. Great matches are witnessed when players or teams have similar strength.

Grouping or classification of players or teams of similar strength has always been a problem. The methods used are usually subjective. This creates a lot of controversy.

A tournament system being used for Clubs could be the solution.  Unlike the professionals, who are expected to be at their peak in each and every tournament they participate in, players at the Club level are not into the sport, full-time.  Thus, the Club players may have a different playing “level” for each tournament they join.

As such, this system makes the players themselves determine their “level”. The results are numerical, making it very objective. It is called the Swiss System. Players or teams are paired off each round with a win receiving 1 point; a draw half a point and a loss no points. Players within the same point group are paired with one another for the next round. As the rounds progress the players or teams are paired off with those of relatively similar strength. Thus, being eventually ranked.

Once the players or teams are ranked, they are now divided into equal divisions. We call them divisions, because it is numerical or objective in nature. Competition within a division can now commence. Great matches will be witnessed because the players or teams are of similar strength.
